Get yourself a disposable camera. Nothing fancy, and stick a label on it explaining what you are doing, nice and simple. Take a photo somewhere along your race day, then pass it to someone else on the run or in the crowd asking them to take a photo, any photo, and pass it on again.
Your label can give instructions where to post it (and include a prepaid postage)
Your label could give instructions where to drop off the camera at the finish area (at the Charity stand that you maybe running the race to raise money for perhaps)
It could also state the web address you will post the photos too. But maybe it won’t.
There is risk involved. So maybe get three cameras going along the root and see what, if anything you get back.
